Yes, grafting. It was developed by Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portugal general who was fond of gardening.
First grafted a plant when Portugal landed in Goa with a local mango tree in Ratnagiri and another Mango tree.
This was one of the mother plants. Later it was developed further, and now it is our yummy Alphonso Mango. Hence this yummy king of fruits and King of Mango is named after the great Portugal general Afonso de Albuquerque.
